i think the spotlight always gives you stage fright
†WISH THIS ALL WOULD END RIGHT†
†STOP MAKING MY HEAD SPIN†
it's over but what if we just pretend
It was the beginning of the school year and Elie knew that being on the cheerleading squad was going to be hard work which was exactly why she was standing on the school fields practicing. She moved gracefully but it was obvious that she wasn’t a born cheerleader. Cheerleading was a second option for her, a less intense style of gymnastics. Elie knew her short height would be a help but she felt that her slightly bulky muscled nature may be a hindrance. She didn’t see herself as a stereotypical cheerleader, she wasn’t blonde, in fact the idea of Elie being blonde was quite ridiculous. Elie was a simple girl with a rather big dream, she wanted to represent her country in the Olympics but that dream was nothing now. Elie had moved from Australia to America and because of this her dreams were shattered. She was good enough to be on the national team but the law forbade her from competing in the national team as an American and she was too far away to train in Australia so it meant, until she had an American citizenship she couldn’t go any further with her gymnastics. No, this wasn’t a dream on hold, this was a dream in the bin. By the time she would get her American citizenship her gymnastics career would be over. Elie hated that gymnastics was one of those things that ended when you got to a certain age but it did.
Elie was co-captain of the cheer squad, an honour that she held great responsibility. She felt that her and Svetlana made a power duo and she couldn’t wait to confuse the freshman’s with their accents and mix of dialect and slang. Elie was learning to use American ways to explain things but spending so much time with Jason was adding English slang to her vocabulary which had begun to make her accent and expressions very confusing. Elie adored her spot on the team and she decided that joining Cheer at the end of her freshman year was the best decision she had ever made, now Stella cheered too and Elie loved being able to share her love with her cousin. Svet added the dance elements and Elie trained the girls in tumbling, Elie knew how to teach tumbling and she worked with the girls on making sure they were executed to perfection. Elie was very over qualified as even the main tumbler on an award winning cheer squad so newport squad cheerleading was easy for her but she adored it so so much. She had been listening to the new Katy Perry album and she decided that she would love to do dance cheer to one of the tracks, her favourite was peacock but she was pretty sure the school wouldn’t allow that.
Elie stood on the fields with her iPod headphones in her ears and her iPod tapped to her arm by a band so it wouldn’t move as she danced. She played Peacock into her ears and created a routine on the spot, it was simple but she loved the song so much that the dance seemed to have even more energy. Elie decided that Katy Perry was a musical genius, I mean who else would make a song about a peacock? She pulled the headphones out and tucked them in before starting a tumbling pass where the headphones would have gotten caught in her arms. She continued to tumble unaware that someone was watching her. Her toes were always pointed and her extensions were perfection. Tumbling was Elie’s speciality, she didn’t have the best rhythm and she wasn’t the best dancer but her tumbling put all the other girls to shame, she was a gymnast. Elie knew that she didn’t look like a typical gymnast but she had never let that stop her, she had worked hard to prove herself and that had put her on the track she was today, well before the big offset which had left her career in tatters, it was okay, she had Cheer now and it was just as fun but a lot less punishing.
