Maddi didn’t like the feeling of being back at school; she had had a pretty successful education but the thoughts of going back all those years were not a pleasant idea for her. Maddi had been a pretty popular girl at school but mainly with the males, she had always dressed quite ‘slutty’ and it had made the girls start to dislike her but nevermind that, Maddi was no longer attending highschool but instead she was teaching at it. She was dressed very smartly in a pair of trousers, a modest t-shirt and flat shoes. Maddi wasn’t used to wearing flats and she felt incredibly small but she wasn’t going to let that bring her confidence down. She walked towards the theatre, the way she had been shown by the dean earlier in the day. She smiled at students as she passed them, feeling very responsible although she had a feeling she didn’t look it. Madison Collins wasn’t exactly your usual teacher type but she had heard that most teachers at Newport High were the stereotypical type. Maddi was actually quite looking forward to the staff room although she also suspected that wasn’t as exciting as every child imagined it to be. At a mere 5”2 most of the pupils towered over Maddi but she stood tall clutching her folder full of lesson plans. She had a class today where she was going to start with projection, it was actually one of the hardest things in theatre but once you had the knack it was as simple as that. She knew a lot of people depended on microphones but she wanted to teach these kids that they weren’t necessary; she once did a whole west end show without a mic because hers broke and her changes were too quick to fit her with another one.
She entered the auditorium and took a deep breath; she loved seeing a theatre so empty and unused, it was a haven for her. Maddi did love doing tv and films and such but the theatre was where she loved to be, she loved having a whole stage and being able to see and meet the audience that had come out just to see the show she was in. She knew it was harder and more expensive to get to the theatre and come see the show then flip on the tv and watch her. She knew she would miss coming out of the stage door and being able to sign all the programs and CD’s of the people who had come to see her but she knew there would be elements of teaching that she loved as well. Her smile widened as she noticed the piano which stood on the stage and she got excited and bee-lined towards it. Maddi loved music, she hadn’t been an actress she probably would have been a musician but she knew she was better with musical theatre songs. She smiled at sat down at the gorgeous piano whilst she softly ran her fingers across the keys. She played a few notes and then started to play the title song from legally blonde the musical. Of course it sounded incredibly different without the orchestra and such but she loved it acoustically, to help her learn the songs Maddi had learnt them all on the piano too so she could practice them at home, it helped her with the notes and the tuning.
She started at the beginning with the soft lyrics ‘take back the books and pack up the clothes’ it was an emotional song and she couldn’t help but get caught up in Elle’s story whilst she sang it. Her face automatically told Elle’s story and she just managed to stop herself crying slightly, the meaning behind that song was hardwired into her. It was one of Maddi’s favourite songs because it started off so slow and peaceful and ended up pretty energetic and powerful; it built up so steadily and showed such a change in the character. Maddi knew she probably shouldn’t be playing the piano during school hours but she had ten minutes before school started and nothing else to do with her time so this seemed like a good use of time. She didn’t need to set anything up as she had the scripts in her folder and she was working on projection so all they needed were their words and their voices. Although she was about to teach projection Maddi didn’t project her voice too far when she sang because she didn’t want people down the hallway to hear her, she was probably at 20% compared to the strength of her voice in the theatre. Maddi knew some people felt she was a little obsessed with legally blonde but when you get that attached to a role it just becomes part of you. She was the first Elle ever on broadway and that was something that she would never forget, it was something she would hold closest to her and so this musical and these songs would always be some of Maddi’s favourites.
